Come On Yeah

3AM and Susie’s breaking hearts for heaven
The elms in the park are sleeping like the seven-eleven
She never felt so contented
Where all the saints are represented
And she’s only lonely when they’re gone

I got a reason for livin’, that reason’s livin’
Come on yeah! Come on yeah!
You got a line in believin’, who are you deceivin’?
Oh yeah
Forgive me if I come on ungrateful
I was counting on you being unfaithful
But all you really want from me is just
Come on yeah!

7AM and a train left town for ever
The slickers in the park are living on the never-never
How can heaven turn the sunshine
Into cemetery blues and local news?
They only love you when you’re gone

I got a reason for livin’, that's the reason I'm givin'
Come on yeah! Come on yeah!
You got a line in believin’, who are you deceivin’?
Oh yeah
Forgive me if I come on ungrateful
I was counting on you being unfaithful
But all you really want from me is just
Come on yeah!

Come on Yeah, when I see you I know I’m home
Come on Yeah, the gas-towers and your redbrick roads

I got a reason for livin’, that reason's livin'
Come on yeah! Come on yeah!
You got a line in believin’, who are you deceivin’?
Oh yeah
Forgive me if I come on ungrateful
But I never ever saw you so faithful
And all you really want from me is just come on yeah!
All you really want from me is just come on yeah!
All you’ll ever get from me is just come on yeah!

Everything Solid Melts Into Air

Where were you the day they opened up the Wall?
And all the lies and false-talk seemed to melt into the air?
Did you raise a glass or cry into your beer?
And did a new world glow for you or simply disappear?

When you turn around
Do you touch the ground?
Do you make a sound
When there's no-one around?

Come with me to where the tourists seem so real
As day by day they rob us of our heroes
Watch the screen as Charlie takes a gasp and then is gone
But did it show that half your town was wearing yellow shoes?

When you turn around
Do you touch the ground?
Do you make a sound
When there's no-one around?

We look around in wonder
As they push us under
Yeah

Can you tell me how to get to Revolution Square?
I've got to get a shot before it melts into the air
Then we'll wave their flags and even buy their beer
And raise a glass to ages past
Before we disappear

When you turn around
Do you touch the ground?
Do you make a sound
When there's no-one around?

Central Station Sings

See you walk by Central Station
Tears in your eyes
Wonder how you keep on walking
With so much pain inside
Someone said they saw him
Somewhere alive
But you know it's lies
There's nothing on earth can bring him back
No train running down that lonely track
Only a memory of his words
When Central Station sings

Central Station
Central Station
Central Station sings

Central Station
Central Station
Central Station sings

See you reading on a platform
Poems and lines
Tokens of a brighter future
Where peace and justice shine
And the ones who knew him
Know he was brave
The memories we save
Are all that can keep us standing strong
When the pathway to freedom seems so long
Above all the shouts his voice returns
When Central Station sings

Central Station
Central Station
Central Station sings

The road is long
But we're standing strong

Central Station
Central Station
Central Station sings

Central Station
Central Station
Central Station sings

I Won't Fall

You said everything could be magic
She said 'we're the ones' and that's alright
And I don't know why I don't know
Where to find the words that would make it all OK
The winter's come and here's another year

Won't you come down from the mountains
And face the truth of what's happened to you
Of what's lying before you so wasted and torn
A death unborn

And if I've told you once I've told you thirteen times
I won't falter
I won't falter
I won't fall

If you see him
Will you ask why we don't fall
While we look the other way

And if I've told you once I've told you thirteen times
I won't falter
I won't falter
I won't fall

So look away now
Turn away
From the answers that dare not speak their name to us

And if I've told you once I've told you thirteen times
I won't falter
I won't falter
I won't falter
I won't fall

You're Still Here

You're still here
It's half past three
I thought that you'd be on the road by now
Like you said you would
Instead I find you sitting here
Just watching Al Pacino
And drinking all the wine that I was saving for your birthday

You're still here
It's half past ten
I thought I told you to collect your things
And walk through the door
I need to clear my head and make some calls
Just get my stuff together
Maybe see you Thursday
Maybe Friday
See you on the weekend

I love the way you take my hand
The way you curse the rain
And the way that every snowflake has a name

You're still here
It's half past midnight
We both said all there is to say
We cried our hearts out through our eyes
Now tell me we'll be friends forever
Though you don't believe it
Cos the closer lovers are the further they must fly apart

But you're still here
In the corner of my eye
Drawing secrets, telling stories
Singing songs without an ending
You're still here
In the morning light beside me
In my head
In my hands
You're still here

Burn Brighter

Have you got a light, my friend
The night is coming down
Got a feeling that it’s going to be a long one
Been trying to find some answers
For as long as I can tell
But the questions keep on at me like a rainstorm

You don’t have to answer
When I talk to you this way
Subject yourself to me another day?
Nothing’s overcome
When I refer my pain to you
All I want is everybody’s truth

Burn brighter light
Bright, bright light
Gotta turn my face away because it’s blinding me
Burn brighter light
Bright, bright light
Find a braver way to shine before you burn out

Take my hand and lead me
Up towards your promised land
Cos I can’t find my way there any longer
I thought I knew the land-lie
Thought that I could read the signs
But the skies have turned to dusk and it’s dropped out of sight

So burn brighter light
Bright, bright light
Gotta turn my face away because you’re blinding me
Burn brighter light
Bright, bright light
Find a braver way to shine before you burn out

I eat but I’m still hungry
Yeah I drink but I’m still thirsty
And I love but I’m still lonely
Someone help me

The door is always open
Any time you want to run
You can leave a note to tell us why you’re goin’

And live on in these words (burn brighter)
Live on in these words (burn brighter)
Live on in these words
And the wailing of these strings.

And burn brighter light
Bright, bright light
Gotta turn my face away before it burns me to my soul
Burn brighter light
Bright, bright light
Find a braver way to shine before you burn out

Don't Take My Baby to Town

Don’t take my baby to town, boy
Don’t take my baby to town
You got a fine set of wheels
Got a full head of hair
You could take her round the nightspots
And show her what’s there

Just flash your cash at the door-man
Of some shicky-mickey cocktail bar
You got a winning way of walking
Let the scandals do the talking
Don’t take my baby to town

My baby loves the lights on Broadway
She digs the sequins and the hats
She loves the makeup and the Li-be-ra-ce acts
But she don’t know what goes on behind the flats

You’re gonna paint me into a corner
The most accommodating guy around
So don’t take my baby to town boy
Don’t take my baby to town

My baby loves the lights on Broadway
She digs the sequins and the hats
She loves the greasepaint and the Ca-li-for-ni-cats
But she don’t see what goes on behind the flats

Don’t take my baby to town, boy
Don’t take my baby to town
You got a fine bunch of curls
And a nonchalant air
You might take her to the parking lot
Or heaven knows where

You can wap your wad on the counter
Of some shicky-mickey cocktail bar
But don’t take my baby to town, boy
Don’t take my baby to town
Don’t take my baby to town, boy
Don’t take my baby to town
Don’t take my baby to town, boy
Don’t take… my… baby… to town!

Alright!

Destitution Row

Empty voices, faux-soul pleading
Pour forth from the flatscreens
There’s a battle royal and it’s raging
But Simon just don’t care

Payin’ out all your hopes and dreams
For your fifteen minutes of fame
Bring it on, hey baby, let me introduce
Your thirteen seconds of shame

And won’t you take me out tonight
Won’t you take me out tonight
Won’t you show me where the flowers grow
Down on Destitution Row

Carjack sirens scream a riot through lockdown city streets
Old Molotov – he’s riding high tonight
His chaos reigns supreme
Landsmen hide away in fear as the monster bears his fangs
The dragon caged, goodnight, God bless you all
The Sun shall rise again

And won’t you take me out tonight
Won’t you take me out tonight
Won’t you show me where the hopeless cry
Down on Destitution Row

Oh the men of wealth and power
Man, they never seemed to miss a beat
Meanwhile little Jeanie’s down there doin’ time
Just for trying to make ends meet
Where’s our Tyler, where’s our Bruce?
The hero of our age?
Won’t you take… Take a little piece of my slumber, Lord
And turn it into rage

And won’t you take me out tonight
Won’t you take me out tonight
Won’t you show me where the desperate die
Down on Destitution Row

Rise like lions, shake the dust
From Destitution Row
Rise like lions, win we must
Here on Destitution Row.

Ain't Gonna Drive Your Train

To the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Tony Blair

The smile you used to reel me in
Was the one you used to kill
The hopes we found at the start of the road
The dreams we dared to dream

I wanted so much to believe in you
So hard I damn near cried
You played me for a fool okay
I should have crossed a different way

I ain't gonna drive your train no more
I ain't gonna drive your train
It's riding into trouble down a broken rail
I'd try to save it but I'm fixing to fail

I ain't gonna drive your train no more
I ain't gonna drive your train
I'm done with your lies and I'm through with the pain
So I ain't gonna drive your train

When I was no more than a kid, they say
A songbird far away
Carried a tune of liberty
In a voice so strong and free
They broke his face and his hands, you see
Shot him through his big old heart
Carried him out in the dead of the night
But his words they could not kill

I ain't gonna fix your plane no more
I ain't gonna fix your plane
It's flying into Hades and the wings are aflame
I gotta run before you do me the same
I ain't gonna fix your plane no more
I ain't gonna fix your plane
The payload's a mother and it's looking to rain
So I ain't gonna fix your plane.

How can you stand there and say it's the truth?
How can you stand there at all?
How can you say there's a rhyme in it all?
And how come you're smiling still?

I ain't gonna drive your train no more
I ain't gonna drive your train
It's riding into trouble down a broken rail
I'd try to save it but I'm fixing to fail

I ain't gonna drive your train no more
I ain't gonna drive your train
I'm done with your lies and I'm through with the pain
So I ain't gonna drive your train
Yes I'm done with your lies and I'm through with the pain
So I ain't gonna drive your train

Time and Place

Rode the midnight train goin’ anywhere
Just like the girl in the song
Out to find a peculiar spark
Turns a life to a burning flame
Sudden secrets in a stranger’s eyes
And words I can’t explain
Got a feeling that the time we had
Ain’t never gonna be the same

The red of the sky and the smoke in your eye
Another year passes like a firefly
And this is the time and place where we belong

Took a journey through a beat-up land
Where dreams are made and lost
Took a rain-check on a silver sand
And danced to the sound of the street
Consternation in a capital
Indifference in a costal town
Got a feeling that the time we had
Ain’t never gonna be the same

The red of the sky and the smoke in your eye
Another year passes like a firefly
And this is the time and place where we belong
This is the time and place where we belong

We can never go back
The river is never the same
The leaves have covered the tracks
And the power’s down
Oh yeah

The red of the sky and the smoke in your eye
Another year passes and you’re askin’ why
If this is the time and place
Deal me the queen or the ace
This is the time and place where we belong
This is the time and place where we belong

Heart in a Field

For John Heartfield

Man, I read in the News today
They found a heart in a field
Guess it got me to thinking somehow
'Bout old Helmut's crazy ride

Pulling pictures and signs from the street
To piece together the truth
The heavy cross and the smouldering land
Printed face and the reaching hand

Why are you frightened?
The woods can't harm you
A step in time
And the trees will calm your mind
The path is clear
All you have to do is read it

They found a heart in a foreign field
They found a scar in the dawn
Between the road and the ripening corn
They found a heart in a field
They found a heart in a field

Then you're home in a different zone
Same old streets but somehow nothing's the same
Did you leave your heart in a foreign field?
Suspicion the sword and shield

Seems they never believed you, though
Your line was always focussed and true
So you left your heart in a foreign field
The vision will never yield

They found a heart in a foreign field
Blood beating fast in the dawn
Between the road and the ripening corn
They found a heart in a field
They found a heart in a field
They found a heart in a field

Black Cat Flight Case

The troubadour packed his bags and flew
Cranking a tune in the blue
Feline companion in a battered chrome box
Never knew if it was true

Landed in Milan, or was it JFK?
I'm sensing a tale on the way
Zeno effect was instrumental that day
And ‘Ebony Claws’ is OK

There's a black cat sleeping in a flight case
Everybody's hoping that the cat ain't dead
I'm sure the little kitty's gonna be just fine
As long as the case stays closed

Jacky takes a bus out to the jewellery store
Uncertain, he tugs at a phone
Feeling insecure but sometimes less is really more
Does he really wanna know the score?

Jennie’s feeling sad because she got no place to go
I’m guessing she’s testing a low
Wonders if the truth is really worth the shock and awe
Probably suspecting “no”

There's a black cat sleeping in a flight case
Everybody's hoping that the cat ain't dead
I'm sure the little kitty's gonna be just fine
As long as the case stays closed

They say it's only what you know that hurts you
A single drop of red is what it takes (and when you're dead,
Ignorance is bliss - if bliss is what you wish)
It'll turn your white streaks to rust!

If you only never knew
If you only never knew
If you only never knew
If you only never knew

There's a black cat sleeping in a flight case
Everybody's hoping that the cat ain't dead
I'm sure the little kitty's gonna be just fine
As long as the case stays closed

Black cat. Flight case.

Marie-Caroline

"Let's spend the night together", she said
"Not in the way you thought I meant it!"
We could walk hand-in-hand on the beach
Out to where you saw the space ship landing!

I don't believe that the earth has a brain
Or the birds in the air are predicting the rain
But I'm thinking that maybe it's time to unwind
So I'm killing some time with Marie-Caroline

(Marie Caroline) Marie Caroline
(Marie Caroline) Marie Caroline
I don't believe that the trees have a scene
But I'm keen to be seen
With Marie-Caroline

(Marie-Caroline) Marie Caroline
(Marie-Caroline) Marie Caroline
I'd be surprised if the mountains have eyes
But I'm learning to lie
For Marie-Caroline

Look up at the stars, she pointed and said:
"So much closer tonight than they were before
Comets crossing the Belt of Orion, can't you see?
Must be the start of a New Age dawning!"

I'm not aware that the crabs on the beach
Or the fish in the sea are a family to me
But I'm hoping it's better than being alone
So I'm wandering home with Marie-Caroline

(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
I don't believe that the dolphins can fly
But I'm happy to try for Marie-Caroline

(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
I don't believe in eternal return
But I'm willing to learn for Marie-Caroline

From the sine qua non to the je ne sais quois
From the Tour Eiffel to the Eiffel Tower
I've been having a ball with Marie C
I'm gonna marry
Guess I'm gonna marry
Yes I'm gonna marry
Marie-Caroline

(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
I don't believe that the rocks have a dream
But I'm starting to dream of Marie-Caroline

(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
(Marie-Caroline) Marie-Caroline
I don't believe in a godhead who cares
But I'm ready to care for Marie-Caroline
